The rise of genomics and accumulation of heterogeneous amounts of biomedical data is driving the emergence of a new systems-based approach to life sciences. The present research line aims at applying engineering methods to model multiscale physiological systems in an integrative way, which is expected to provide a deep and comprehensive knowledge of how biological systems work, predict their behavior and enable to define optimal perturbations in order to achieve a desired outcome.

Although some efforts have been made in this direction, a definition of the best mathematical strategy, its computational implementation and its effective application to real clinical problems such as patient stratification and therapy optimization remain elusive and constitute the main motivation and innovative nature of this topic of research.
